What Is the Kardashev Scale?

The Kardashev Scale is a system that classifies civilizations based on their energy consumption capacity. Proposed in 1964 by Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev, the scale measures a civilization’s technological advancement by its ability to harness and utilize energy. The basic idea is simple: the more energy a civilization can control, the more advanced it is. By highlighting the link between energy use and technological progress, the Kardashev Scale encourages us to think about humanity’s future and its potential to reach higher levels of civilization.

A typical Kardashev Scale includes three main types: Type I, II, and III civilizations.

Where Humanity Stands on the Kardashev Scale

Currently, humanity is not yet a Type I civilization on the Kardashev Scale—we’re estimated to be around 0.72. This reflects our growing ability to harness and use various energy sources. However, we still rely heavily on fossil fuels, and our use of renewable energy isn’t fully optimized yet. Advances in technologies like solar and wind power are promising.

Research into nuclear fusion and initiatives for space exploration indicate that we are moving toward Type I status. Still, as a planetary civilization, we face significant challenges to fully realize our potential, including resource management, climate change, and global cooperation.

The Kardashev Scale and Civilization Classes: From Zero to Infinity

Let’s dive into the details of civilization levels on this scale. As mentioned earlier, there are normally three main types, but let’s expand it up to Level 7. We’ll start straight away with Type 0 civilization.

Type 0 Civilization

A Type 0 civilization primarily relies on non-renewable energy sources like fossil fuels and uses renewable sources, such as hydroelectric power, only to a limited extent. This category spans a broad spectrum of societal development, from primitive life forms to modern human societies, with subcategories reflecting different levels of technological advancement.

For example, a civilization classified as Type 0.1 would be at a very primitive stage, using basic tools merely to survive, while a Type 0.7 civilization represents a modern society beginning to explore sustainable energy solutions and space research.

Type I Civilization

A Type I civilization on the Kardashev Scale has full control over the energy resources of its planet. This means it can harness all available energy from sources like solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear power to meet its needs. A Type I civilization may also possess technologies to monitor and manage planetary weather systems.

Reaching Type I status requires a high level of global cooperation, a foundation humanity has already begun building through the internet. This intercontinental network enables widespread information sharing and accelerates technological progress on a global scale.

type 1 civilization

However, the transition to a Type I civilization carries significant risks. Rapid industrialization needed to reach this level, if not carefully managed, could worsen climate change. Overconsumption could deplete Earth’s resources, and competition over these resources might spark geopolitical tensions. The development of nuclear fusion, if mismanaged, could lead to disasters, and technological advances could make the creation of weapons of mass destruction easier.

For humanity to sustainably exist as a Type I civilization, interplanetary diversification becomes important. Energy would likely become abundant, cheap, or even free, making it accessible to everyone. Heavy reliance on renewable energy would benefit the environment through reduced pollution. Cities would be smart and efficient, with automated systems managing everything from traffic to energy usage. Communication would be instant and seamless worldwide. Space exploration would also likely expand, with technologies like space-based solar power plants extending our energy reach beyond Earth.

space mining

Philip Meer, co-founder of the Planetary Resources program and a planetary scientist, predicts that as coal and oil run out, nuclear and renewable energy alone won’t be enough to sustain Earth. He suggests that humanity should launch a century-long project to develop space mining operations and spacecraft, targeting asteroids or the Moon, to bring back the materials Earth needs. However, before harvesting space resources, one of the few solutions at our disposal is to develop nuclear fusion, which could provide nearly limitless clean energy if used safely.

Type II Civilization

A Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale, also called a stellar civilization, has the capability to harness and manage the entire energy output of its star. This necessity arises from the fact that relying solely on the energy and natural resources reaching their planets wouldn’t be sufficient to support advances in technology and science.

One of the most famous concepts related to reaching Type II is the Dyson Sphere, proposed by theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960. This hypothetical megastructure is designed to encircle a star and capture all of its energy output. While popular science fiction often depicts it as a solid shell, a more practical approach would likely involve a Dyson Swarm—a collection of solar-collecting satellites orbiting the star.

With this energy, a Type II civilization could support massive industrial projects, sustain extremely large populations, and begin large-scale space colonization across entire star systems. Daily life in such a civilization would be completely transformed. For example, interplanetary travel could become as routine as air travel is for us today, enabling people to live on different planets or in massive space habitats.

Humans could reside in rotating space habitats called O'Neill cylinders, capable of housing millions and creating Earth-like environments. They might employ theoretical stellar engineering to optimize planetary orbits for human use, engage in large-scale asteroid mining, or extract resources from gas giants. Another fascinating possibility is that Type II civilizations could create artificial stars or smaller controlled fusion reactors that mimic stellar processes, thereby generating even more energy.

Type III Civilization

A Type III civilization on the Kardashev scale, or a galactic civilization, can control and harness the energy output of an entire galaxy. Such a civilization could tap into the energy of billions of stars and even extract power from black holes or other cosmic phenomena to meet industrial demands.

A core idea linked to Type III civilizations is galactic-scale engineering: theoretically constructing megastructures or manipulating entire star systems. This could include building massive Dyson spheres around multiple stars or entire stellar systems. They might also create “stellar engines” capable of altering a star’s motion or modulating its energy output to suit civilization-wide needs.

type 3 civilization

With this level of energy and technology, a Type 3 civilization reaches mind-blowing heights. They could open wormholes for faster-than-light travel, build planet-sized computers to simulate entire universes, and harness energy from rotating black holes via the Penrose process or from Hawking radiation.

Another wild concept is the Matrioshka Brain: by constructing layered Dyson spheres around a star, each layer powers massive galaxy-spanning supercomputers. In this way, a single star becomes a computation hub stretching across an entire galaxy. This represents the ultimate fusion of galactic engineering and super-advanced technology.

In such a civilization, intergalactic travel could become as routine as interplanetary travel is for a Type 2 civilization. People could live in massive space stations around different stars, Dyson shells, or even artificial worlds simulating any environment they desire. With resources becoming nearly limitless, the civilization could undertake galaxy-wide projects: restructuring entire solar systems or making planets across the galaxy habitable. Additionally, post-biological life could emerge, allowing consciousness to be transferred into machines or digital environments, enabling individuals to exist in various forms or even spread their awareness across the galaxy.

Type 4 Civilization

A Type 4 civilization on the Kardashev scale, or a universal civilization, is one that can command and control the energy of the entire universe. This means not only harnessing the energy of galaxies but also tapping into fundamental forces of the cosmos, including dark matter and dark energy. Such a civilization could manipulate cosmic events on an unprecedented scale, control black holes and supernovae, and even alter the very fabric of space-time.

type 4 civilization

An intriguing concept here is universal-scale engineering. A Type 4 civilization could create and destroy entire galaxies, construct megastructures spanning multiple star systems, or even design artificial universes. Using self-replicating machines known as Von Neumann probes, they could spread across the cosmos, harvesting resources and converting them into energy or infrastructure.

Another theory suggests that a Type 4 civilization could achieve quantum-level control over the universe, manipulating the very quantum fields that underlie reality. This would allow them to alter the laws of physics, create stable wormholes for instant travel across the cosmos, or access other dimensions. They could also tap into exotic energy sources, like black hole evaporation or the vast energy stored in the cosmic microwave background.

At the same time, a Type 4 civilization could revolutionize cosmic communication, using gravitational waves or neutrinos instead of radio or light, or even achieve instant communication over vast distances via quantum entanglement. Some theories suggest they could attempt to reverse entropy, countering the universe’s natural drift toward chaos to maintain structures and systems indefinitely. With such immense energy at their disposal, they could even achieve a form of immortality—either for themselves or for their creations.

In terms of modes of existence, a Type 4 civilization could transcend physical forms. They might exist as pure energy or information, moving freely through space and time. Their consciousness could spread across galaxies, existing simultaneously in multiple locations or dimensions. Such a civilization could simulate entire realities, explore alternate modes of existence, or even create entirely new forms of life.

Type 5 Civilization

On the Kardashev scale, a Type 5—or multiverse civilization—possesses the ability to harness and control energy on a scale that affects multiple universes or dimensions beyond their own. Such a civilization can manipulate not just the laws of physics, but the very fabric of reality itself. White holes offer extraordinary opportunities for cosmic-scale manipulation. Unlike black holes, which consume matter and energy, white holes eject it, theoretically providing enormous energy or creating new cosmic structures. A Type 5 civilization could continually feed matter into white holes within their universes, contributing to the formation of new galaxies or large-scale resource renewal. If white holes are connected to black holes via wormholes, they could serve as gateways for matter and energy to travel between different regions of a universe or across multiverses.

type 5 civilization

Another fascinating concept tied to a Type 5 civilization is multiverse engineering. They could create, manipulate, or traverse multiple universes, each with its own physical laws or constants. This includes the creation of “bubble universes” with unique properties and rules. Manipulating quantum reality is also within reach; they could control quantum fields and dimensions to alter or create entire realities. They might develop cosmic algorithms that reshape the fundamental nature of time and space or generate entirely new universes.

Hyperdimensional travel is another possibility: this civilization could move across dimensions or planes of existence beyond three-dimensional space and time, allowing them to explore or exploit realms completely outside our current understanding. Type 5 civilizations could also access energy sources beyond our observable universe, such as cosmic strings or remnants of the Big Bang. They might even develop technologies capable of affecting nature’s fundamental constants, like the speed of light or gravity, giving them total control over the fabric of reality.

This level of advancement implies near-unlimited creative power. A Type 5 civilization wouldn’t just shape their own universe—they could create or govern multiple universes or dimensions. Essentially, they exist across multiverses, managing all possibilities.

For readers familiar with Lucy: the scene where Lucy reaches 100% of her brain capacity and says “I am everywhere” could be seen as a nod to this civilization level—a presence spanning multiple universes.

Type 6 Civilization

On the Kardashev scale, a Type 6—or multidimensional civilization—would possess the power to control and manipulate multiple universes beyond just a single one. An intriguing concept, multiverse synthesis, suggests that such a civilization could create and merge multiple universes, forming complex realities with entirely new physical laws and constants. This could involve constructing different cosmic structures and experimenting with fundamental forces to observe or utilize diverse forms of existence.

type 6 civilization

A Type 6 civilization could also harmonize the physical laws and constants across multiple universes, creating a vast cosmic network. This process of cosmic alignment would allow them to fine-tune interactions between universes, synchronize large-scale events, or precisely control multiversal phenomena. Another fascinating idea is cosmic resurrection: such a civilization could harness residual energy from collapsed or extinct universes to revive or evolve these fading realities, reshaping dead or dying universes and giving them new forms.

Additionally, a Type 6 civilization could manipulate time on a multiversal scale, controlling or altering the flow of time in different universes. They could create time loops, synchronize events across universes, or construct new temporal dimensions independent of conventional time laws. Furthermore, they could develop trans-universal communication methods, capable of transmitting information or exerting influence simultaneously across multiple universes. This might involve leveraging multiversal quantum entanglement or inventing entirely new forms of communication that transcend the traditional boundaries of space-time.

Type 7 Civilization

On the Kardashev scale, a Type 7 civilization represents a level of advancement where the distinction between civilization and existence completely dissolves. At this stage, the control and influence of the civilization extends beyond all universes and multiverses, encompassing the very nature of reality and existence itself. The transition from Type 6 to Type 7 is often considered impossible or meaningless, because Type 7 is not just a civilization manipulating multiple realities—it becomes the fundamental structure of existence itself.

type 7 civilization

A Type 7 civilization is not merely the master of all universes and multiverses; it is the embodiment of the underlying principles and forces of existence. It does not operate within or above a reality; rather, it is the foundational reality that defines and creates all possible forms of existence. Consequently, Type 7 is defined by its nature, not by its technology or methods. It transcends all material and spiritual concepts, representing a mode of existence beyond human comprehension.

Therefore, discussing advancement beyond Type 7 becomes meaningless. At this stage, the civilization is synonymous with existence itself, and the notion of further progression or transformation no longer applies.
